NEWSLETTER – OCTOBER/DECEMBER 2010

www.uptonhortsoc.org.uk

Dear Member

Here we are in Autumn again! We had a funny Summer didn't we? Very hot and dry one minute and then very wet the next. Still the huge record number of fantastic entries in the Summer Show showed how well you all coped with the weather conditions.  Many thanks to all that entered and to everyone that helped to make the Show such a sucess.

Autumn Show

Speaking of shows our next one is the Autumn show which is on the 23rd October.  Entries are to be in by the 20th October.  If you have misplaced your show schedule let me know or go to our website and you can find it there. If there are any new entrants who are not sure what to do let us know and we can help you. Don't forget there are the novice classes if you haven't entered before.

Spring Show 2011

Due to the success of last years show we are going to carry on having the Spring Show on a Saturday. It  is on Saturday 26th March. The schedule for the Spring Show is being revamped so it will be out shortly – most of the usual catorgeries will be included.

December Meeting

The December meeting by popular demand is 'Christmas Festive Fun' followed by a 'Festive Feast' and the tickets are on sale now. They are £8.50, you can buy them at the hut or at the October and November meetings. If you can't get to any of these please give me a call 01244 379976. They are going very fast so if you would like to go please buy a ticket soon to avoid disappointment.

News from the Hut

The last Saturday for the Hut this season is 9th October. Don't forget to stock up on compost and all the things you will need before the Hut opens again in February.

There will be bowls of hyacinths on sale at the November meeting so bear them in mind while you are thinking about your Christmas presents.

Don't forget if you have any free time to help at the Hut next year please let us know, volunteers are always appreciated.

The Hut team have been very busy this year and have worked really hard, so a big thank you to them for all their hard work.

Bird Seed Orders

Janet is taking orders for bird seed so if you would like to stock up put your name on the list, you can do this at the Hut, at the October meeting or by ringing Janet on 01244 300342. The order is going to be placed after the October meeting.

Competition Bulbs

The daffodil and tulip bulbs for the Spring Show competitions will be available at the October meeting. There is a small charge of 50p.  Please see Jeff to get your bulbs or let us know if you would like some but can't make the meeting.

Seed Catalogues

The seed catalogues will be available at the Autumn Show.  We will be having Dobies and a new one DT Brown this year. We get 20% discount so it is well worth ordering whatever amount you buy. Any queries or questions regarding the seeds please contact Sally or Alan on 01244 390330. Orders need to be in by the 17th December.

Christmas Floristry Workshop

Once again Judith has very kindly agreed to put on a Floristry Workshop for us. It will to be held at the Guide Hut as normal on the 27th November. Again it is going to be based on a Christmas theme .  If you are interested in attending please call Judith on 01244 375123 or myself on 01244 379976. There are limited spaces so book early to make sure you are included.

Lifts to meetings

As I mentioned in the last newsletter if there is anyone who needs a lift to the meeting during the dark months please let me know and if there is anyone willing to give someone a lift please let me know. It may be the only way some of our members can get to these meetings.

October and November Meetings

Our October meeting is on 6th  October the talk is 'What they really mean – stories from Shows, Rules and Regulations' by Bob Sanderson of Caths Garden Plants. The competition is a vase of Autumn Berries and the visiting sales table is the 'RNLI'.

The November meeting talk is about Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses by Jules Miller. The competition is a Pot Plant and the visiting sales table is 'The Hospice'

Change in the Programme

We have a change in the programme – the March meeting was going to be Sam Youd but he has moved to April and Nick Hamilton will be talking about the 'History of Barnsdale' in March

And finally

I hope you have a good Autumn in your gardens and you can find plenty to put in the Autumn Show. If you have any queries on any of the above please let me know. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Happy gardening
