NEWSLETTER – APRIL/JUNE 2008 |
|
Dear Member, Welcome to my first newsletter of the new season. Everything is now starting to grow again giving a feeling of optimism for the coming year. We have a busy year ahead with a lot going on so here are some dates for your diaries.
Spring Show Wednesday 2nd April The doors open at 7.30pm for this year's Spring Show. Entry forms are included in the show schedule which has been delivered with this newsletter. They are also available on our website. The last day for entries is Monday 31st March. Staging starts at 5.00pm until 6.15pm. Please read the schedule and enter the show. The winner with the most points in the show will win the Perpetual Challenge Cup. The Floral Art this year is titled 'Busting Buds and Trembling Twigs'. Enter all you can and the show benches should look full of spring colour. Also on the night we have Judith Windsor showing us how to show for effect and giving us ideas on how to interpret the floral art sections in the Summer and Autumn Shows. Bob Jones will be there showing us how to take fuchsia cuttings so we will be able to grow our own for summer colour. Jeff will have the Challenges for you. This year they are dahlias, french beans, streptocarpus and the potatoes for the children's challenge. Pete will also have some samples of the fertilisers we sell at the hut with tips on what they are best used for. The hut will have a sales table with all the things you will need to the next few months. All in all a lot going on so I am sure you will be pleased to know our ladies will be there to provide us with a much needed cup of tea.
Trip to the Malvern Show 10th May. The trip to the Malvern show is on Saturday 10th May leaving the library on Wealstone lane at 7.30am. The cost is £21 which covers the cost of the coach and entry into the show. If you would like to go please call Rita on tel 674578 and she will reserve you a ticket or they will be on sale at the Spring Show. Places are going fast so don't leave it too long.
Trip to Follyfield We have organised a trip to Follyfield Nurseries on Wednesday 16th April at 6.45pm. Follyfield is a Nursery that grows it's own plants from seeds and we have been very lucky to have been invited to go along and be shown the journey from seed to plant. The nursery is situated between Hooton and Willaston. If any-one is interested in going please phone me on 379976.
A Totally Topical Summer Supper 4th June Tickets are on sale at the Hut or will be available at the Spring Show for our June meeting. The cost is £5 and includes a finger buffet. The speaker is Shelagh Newman talking on “The Hydrangeas of Holehird”. Again the tickets are selling fast for this members only evening. The Stores Hut The Stores hut is open and trading well. Don't forget to go down and buy all the essential items you need for the coming season. Make sure you get your secateurs and shears sharpened ready for tidying up your gardens. It's opening time changes to a Monday evening on 7th April.
Plant sale 7th May Just a gentle reminder when you are splitting your perennials or sowing your seeds please could you pot up or prick out a few extra for the society. The success of the plant sale depends on all of you so please help to make it a good and profitable sale.
A Few last things Dial House have asked to mention they are having a flower demonstration on the 2nd April at 2pm. All are welcome. Enclosed with this newsletter is a National Garden Scheme booklet for you so you will know of any gardens in our area that will be open for you to go and visit.
On a personal note I would like to thank everyone who has wished me well and been supportive of me in my new role. I will do my best to carry on the good work done by Frances and maintain the success of the society. Many thanks to Frances for all she has done for the society during her 10 years of office and wish her well with her new ventures.
Kind regards and happy gardening Wendy Carman |
