NEWSLETTER – APRIL/JUNE 2009

 

Dear Member

Here we are again, a new season beginning and all the bulbs and plants starting to grow and flower. I love this time of year the end of winter is in sight and the excitement for the coming season starts. I don't know about you but my greenhouse is nearly full already! We have another busy year ahead so here are some dates for your diary.

 

Membership

 

Don't forget our membership year has begun so if you haven't already paid please see Janet at the Hut or at one of our meetings and she will renew your membership for you.

 

                                                Spring Show – Wednesday 1st April


The next meeting is the Spring Show when the doors open at 7.30pm. Entry forms are included with this newsletter in the new schedule and down at the hut. The last day for entries is Monday March 30th. The floral art is 'Dazzling Daffodils'.  Also on the night we will have Frances telling us which bird seed attracts which birds, Judith helping with ideas for the floral art section of the Summer Show and Pete explaining about what the different fertilisers from the hut are for. Jeff will have the lists for the Challenges for the Summer and Autumn shows examples of which are courgettes, cosmos, and for the children hypoestes plants and minature gardens. The Hut will have their sales table and Rita will be taking names for the trips. So once again a busy meeting but we need you all to put pleanty of entries in the Show.

The Hut is now open so don't forget to go down and stock up on all the things you need for  the coming season. Take your gardening tools down to be sharpened to be ready for use as the weather gets better. The opening times are Saturday 10.30am to 12pm until the clocks change when it will be open on a Monday starting on the 6th April 7pm until 8pm.

 

                                                                        Trips

Gardener's World Live

Rita is organising a trip to Gardener's World Live at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday the 13th June.  The cost is £30 which includes the coach fare and entrance in to the show. We will be leaving Wealstone Lane Car Park at 7.30am to enable us to get there as it opens. If you are interested in going please let Rita know at the Spring Show or the May meeting. You can also ring me to book your seat.

 

Follyfield Nursery

We have organised a visit to Follyfield Nursery at Hooton on Tuesday 28th April. We will be given a tour of the working Nursery and shown the 'Life of the Nursery'. There will also be an opportunity to buy plants at the end of the evening. If you are interested in going please put you name on the list at the Hut or at the
next meeting. Again you can always ring me to book your place.

 

Floristry Workshop

Judith Windsor is very kindly holding another Floristry Workshop for us on the 21st March. She will be showing us how to produce a lovely basket in time for Mother's Day. Anyone interested in attending please ring me so I can book you a place as space is limited.  

 

                                                                        June Meeting

 

The tickets are on sale (and going fast) for our June meeting which is a talk from 'Wiggly Wigglers' and a Summer Supper afterwards. If you would like a ticket please let me know or buy one at the next meeting.

 

                                                                        And finally

 

Please remember the Society when you are planting your seeds or spliting your perennials and grow a couple for our Plant Sale in May. Please label them so we can identify them easily when selling them.

Don't forget the Garden trail on the 18th July. Put the date in your diary and keep the day free.

Janet and Mike Elliot have manure available for members to go and help themselves to. Please ring Mike or Janet on 01244 300342 to arrange a convenient time to go to collect some. Please remember to take your own bags with you.

I've run out of room so I'll let you get back to your gardens to carry on the good work. Let's hope we will have a good season this year.
